Portland Wedding Photographer bio picture

a bit about me

My name is Gina Emerson and I am a wedding and portrait photographer based in Portland, Oregon.  I also am a mother of two amazing children.  Michael my five year old, who has the vocabulary of a twenty year old, is a creative genius with a beautiful imagination.  He gives the best hugs and loves making homemade chocolate chip cookies with mom.  Sofia is my three year old and loves music, books, lollipops, and all things French.  My husband Brandon loves photography and often second shoots my weddings along side of me.  He has been monumental in encouraging me to follow my desire for photography.  My family is truly my rock and I wouldn't have been able to pursue this career if it wasn't for them believing in me.

I have always appreciated portraiture, as well as photojournalism.  From the early days of my youth, my parents always had National Geographics lined up on their shelves and I remember spending hours browsing those intriguing images of things and places from around the world.  The photographs spoke to me and I can now see that with my own children, who would probably tell you National Geographic is their favorite magazine.

To describe my wedding photography style, I would say that it leans heavy toward photojournalism, capturing YOU accurately on your wedding day with all the beautiful details as they unfold.   But I also love elegant portraits and believe they are important to balance out your collection of photographs from the day.  My approach is personable, non-intrusive, and natural as we work together to capture the uniqueness of you on your wedding day.  And for those considering my services for special events or portraits, I bring a similar style and the same passion.

Please take some time to browse my site and if you like what you see, leave a comment.  I appreciate feedback and would love to hear from you.

Thank you for considering me as your photographer, it is an honor to be entrusted with your photographs.

Gina Emerson

Marce’t + Darryl – Portland, Oregon Wedding

Darryl and Marce’t were married on a beautiful fall day at St. Andrews Chapel in Southeast Portland.  The wedding ceremony was so sweet and rich with a deep gratitude of their love and life together.  After the ceremony we were blessed with some gorgeous early evening light which was perfect for the family photographs.  The reception celebration that followed was held at Amadeus Manor in Milwaukie.  During our time with Marce’t we learned that her favorite word is “Love” and it truly was a day filled with love.  There was a terrific bond of love and respect between Darryl and Marce’t and all their friends and family.  Brandon and I truly enjoyed sharing and capturing their special day!

Cora and Robert | Portland Engagement Photography

I got to spend what could have been the last beautiful day of Fall  (Nov. 4th) with Cora and Robert at Cathedral Park in Portland, Oregon.  We were there for their Engagement photo session and it was a gorgeous day in the shadow of one of the most beautiful bridges in the Northwest, St. Johns Bridge.

As proof that opposites attract, Robert is an Oregon Duck and Cora is an Oregon State Beaver.  Civil War will definitely be interesting in their household.  Sorry Cora, but I will be with Robert in rooting for the Ducks in December. I don’t know if you know it but you hired an Oregon grad.  :)

I am looking forward to their coming wedding on June 26th, 2010 at Lawrence Art Gallery in Portland’s hip and urban Pearl District.  Bring on the summer!

November 12, 2009 - 11:03 am Shyann - Aww!! What a great session!! How the heck did he get way up on the bridge like that!!? Awesome couple!

November 12, 2009 - 12:13 pm admin - Shyann thank you, and yes they are an awesome couple! Climbing the bridge just sort of happened unexpectedly - Robert turned to me and said "you want me to climb up there?" Me: "yeah, okay". And that was that, without hesitation he was on his way up. Cora and I decided to stay put and admire from a distance :)

November 12, 2009 - 5:20 pm Rian Otto - Terrific job, Gina! What lens did you mostly use?

November 12, 2009 - 5:46 pm admin - Rian you are so sweet, thank you! Well let me see, for this session I used three different lenses: canon 24mm f/1.4 L, canon 50mm f/1.4, and canon 70-200mm f/2.8 L. To answer your question, I think I used the 24mm on the first set. At the point where Robert climbs the side of the bridge, I switched to the 70-200mm. Then it's the 50mm all the way through until the last little collage of images - where I switched back to the 24mm lens.

November 12, 2009 - 6:10 pm Cora - Yay Gina! We really like our pictures so far! Thank you soooo much.

November 12, 2009 - 7:56 pm admin - Cora it is my pleasure, and you are very welcome!

November 12, 2009 - 8:25 pm Toni - those first few under the bridge rock! I love the location. Really I am always glad I visited your blog. You are soo talented!

November 13, 2009 - 2:40 am Cliff - The 24L and those weeping willows made for some crazy depth in the images.. amazing! The pictures of him on the bridge are hilarious too... Your processing is really crisp and clean... I dig it!

November 13, 2009 - 7:06 am Melissa Lawler - Nice work! I love the location.

November 15, 2009 - 4:36 pm Kat Forsyth - These are just gorgeous! Gina, you rock!

November 16, 2009 - 7:20 pm Stephie Joy - You did so awesome on the set! Such clear crisp images, and love the colors!!

November 16, 2009 - 7:45 pm Victor Saidov - Wow! These look stunning! You did amazing job and the photos got classy feel to them! Keep up the great work!

November 16, 2009 - 8:45 pm Vida - Wow these are so amazing.. you really did such a great job!

November 17, 2009 - 2:55 pm Thomas Lester - These are fantastic. Oregon looks stunning this time of year. I'm going to have to plan a trip out there some day.

November 18, 2009 - 3:00 pm Phillip Allen - Such a rich and varied set and you've really showed Cora & Robert off to their best, Gina. Great work with the environments too!

November 20, 2009 - 10:25 pm William Massey - These are lovely! I especially like the ones of them sitting on the stairs, and all the black and whites!

November 23, 2009 - 5:04 pm Drew - I just realized that I never came back to comment this amazing session. Gina can I just say that the processing on these images is amazing, not to mention the photos themselves are awesome. Great work!

November 24, 2009 - 5:14 pm Nikole - Gorgeous Gorgeous Gorgeous

Joanna + Dow – Elk Cove Vineyards Wedding – Part I

When you are getting ready to photograph a wedding and the weather report is showing thunderstorms, you start to get a little nervous.  Especially when you know the bride and groom are getting married at Elk Cove Vineyards in Oregon’s Willamette Valley and they are hoping to have it outside among the breathtaking views of the vineyard.  Well, our fears blew off with the morning clouds and it turned into a lovely day for an outdoor wedding ceremony.  Joanna and Dow were married outside on a beautiful sun drenched day in the presence of their friends and family (and the grapes, of course).  The reception was held in the Roosevelt room where the Elk Cove Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris wine were flowing, along with the conversations, cheer, and stories.  It was a special day for the bride and groom and all involved.  These wedding photographs hopefully tell the story of their day.

Congratulations Joanna and Dow on your marriage and best wishes for the journey you are beginning together.
